As mentioned above, MP3 piracy has become a reality as computer technology has become increasingly powerful - without these advancements, we couldn't have MP3s at all. But MP3 piracy has definitely been helped along by the "extras" which make it more useful and convenient:
- MP3-sharing programs such as Napster make it easy to find and download MP3 music from others, whether the MP3 you're looking for is common or rare.
- High-speed Internet connections allow you to use these MP3-sharing programs faster than ever before - a song that used to take 20 minutes can now be transferred in less than a minute.
- Accessories such as CD recorders and portable MP3 players allow you to listen to digital music wherever you go.
Of course, MP3 piracy hasn't exploded in popularity just because of the technology. The main attraction of MP3 piracy is the temptation of free (or almost free) music. If you only want one song from an album, you can download just that song; if you want a whole album, that's fine as well. And the selection is limitless - if an album is sold in stores, chances are you can find it on the Internet.
